Scarborough Castle's tall keep, barbican, and great curtain wall dominate the Yorkshire headland above the town and harbour of Scarborough. Built during 1136-1212 by William le Gros, King Henry II, and King John, this royal castle was important in national and local politics and defence throughout the Middle Ages, but was badly damaged by Parliamentarian cannon in 1645. Four of the medieval periods important to Scarborough Castle are described in more detail below, and a gallery of pictures are linked to the castle map.

Set on a headland above the North Sea, Scarborough Castle is located on one of the most dramatic castle sites in the country and has over 2,500 years of turbulent history. This natural fortress was favoured by prehistoric settlers before serving as a Roman signal station and Viking haven before the castle was built,  It has endured sieges from medieval kings and Civil War armies, and German naval bombardment during World War II. Now you can climb to the battlement viewing platforms for dramatic coastline views, and take tea in the 18th-century Master Gunner’s House.
